Bats are protected, so exclusion is the only legal option. I inspect the structure, install one-way devices, and seal the entry points. North Carolina prohibits exclusion during the May through July maternity season, so summer inspections are scheduled for the open window.

Squirrels, raccoons, opossums, skunks, groundhogs, armadillos, bobcats, and other animals can damage a property and leave a mess. Squirrels in particular chew wiring and insulation in attics and walls. I remove them, seal the access points where it applies, and handle the cleanup and contamination they leave behind.

Removal without sealing only buys time. I locate every entry point, soffits, rooflines, vents, and gaps, and close them with durable materials. This is the part that keeps the problem from returning.

An open flue is a common entry point for squirrels, raccoons, and birds. I install caps and vent screens to close it off.

A snake in a living space gets a prompt response, including venomous species. I identify the snake, remove it, and look at what drew it in, since snakes follow food and cover. If you can take a clear photo from a safe distance, text it to me and I can usually identify the species before I arrive.

When an animal dies in a wall, attic, crawlspace, or out on the property, I find it, remove it, and clean up the area afterward. This is work that needs a prompt response, and I treat it that way.

Canada geese on a property, pond, or field create mess, damage, and a health concern, and they are federally protected, so control is regulated. I manage them through hazing, habitat modification, and permitted methods where required, for homeowners, HOAs, parks, and commercial sites.

Birds and wildlife near runways are a flight-safety issue, and managing them takes someone who understands both the wildlife and the airfield. As a licensed wildlife agent and a private pilot, I bring a working knowledge of airport operations to the work.

Wildlife control on an airfield is a permitting question as much as a wildlife question, and the species determine the path. Some of the highest-risk birds, starlings and pigeons among them, are unprotected and can be addressed immediately with no permit required. Most others are federally protected, and lethal control requires a depredation permit from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, supported by a USDA recommendation and, where the facility has one, an FAA-approved Wildlife Hazard Management Plan.

I work within that structure, either under a facility’s existing permit as a named subpermittee, or by helping pursue the authorization the situation requires. Hazing and dispersal need no permit at all and are often the right first move. Where lethal control is warranted, I use suppressed precision air rifles, quiet, contained, and suited to an active airfield. Local requirements for discharge apply on every field, and I confirm those before any work begins.

I provide depredation and habitat management for general-aviation and county fields up through regional facilities, on a one-time or ongoing contract basis.

Five bird species in North Carolina are non-native and carry no state protection: European starling, English (house) sparrow, pigeon, Eurasian collared dove, and mute swan.

Because they are unprotected at the state level, there is no season, no bag limit, and no depredation permit required to control them. That means I can respond immediately, with no waiting on paperwork, which is often the difference between a small problem and an expensive one.

These birds foul structures, damage insulation and equipment, contaminate feed and livestock areas, and displace native species. Local ordinances still apply, and I confirm those before any work begins.

For agricultural damage, problem birds, and open-property situations where trapping is impractical or ineffective, I use precision suppressed air rifles to quickly and cleanly dispatch the animal, under whatever permits the species requires. Birds are not the whole of it: a trap-shy groundhog or another stubborn animal that refuses to enter a trap can often be resolved the same way, under the depredation framework North Carolina provides for property damage.

This is the part of the job people ask about most, so I want to be direct about it. Lethal control is not the first tool I reach for, and it is not right for every situation. But when it is warranted, precision matters. A suppressed air rifle in trained hands is quiet, accurate, immediate, and most importantly, humane. It does not disturb neighbors, livestock, or the rest of the property, and it does not leave an animal wounded.

The alternatives are not automatically kinder. Live trapping and relocating an animal often means releasing it into unfamiliar territory, away from its food source and into another animal’s range, where its odds are poor. And for many species, relocating on a different property is illegal. Ignoring a problem lets damage and risk compound. A clean, certain outcome is frequently the most humane one available.
